Position Summary The Stormwater Maintenance Worker is a skilled worker under the direction of a Stormwater Foreman, serving on a work crew of five or less. Work includes maintaining storm water drainage systems, vegetation maintenance and establishment, maintaining water control structures, erosion control structures, open channels (natural & improved), detention and retention ponds, system inspection and verification of new and existing structures. This role includes working to achieve and promote the Municipal Services Department’s mission, which is to provide the community with outstanding public service by maintaining the city’s infrastructure with integrity and innovation. Work is performed with latitude for the exercise of independent judgment and action to achieve and promote the City’s values of integrity, teamwork, service, vision, dedication, and caring. Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities • Performs a variety of manual labor involving maintenance and repairs to storm drains system which includes: shovel work, spreading rock, loading or unloading trucks, transporting construction material, cutting tall grass and weeds, cleaning drainage structures, planting and weeding of erosion control type grasses and plants. • Assists in the construction and maintenance of stream stabilization and restorations. • Operates single and tandem axle dump trucks, farm tractor, snow removal equipment, mowing equipment, skid steer loaders, backhoes, front-end loaders, street sweepers, hand and power tools, and other mechanical equipment. • Native vegetation management including weed eating, herbicide application, and mowing. • May operate heavy equipment on a relief or trainee basis at the discretion of the team leader and under direct supervision. Additional Examples of work Performed • Tree and debris removal • Litter cleanup • Snow and ice removal • Storm sewer repair and replacement • Responds to all work orders assigned by superiors. • Complimenting green infrastructure activities with traditional stormwater infrastructure activities. • Adheres to all safety rules, practices and policies; develops and follows safe work habits; alerts supervisor to dangerous or unsafe conditions in the workplace or vehicle. Education, Experience, Qualifications or Special Requirements • High school diploma or G.E.D. and two years of experience in construction or landscape related field. • Subject to call out for snow and other emergencies, including weekends and holidays. • Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver's license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements or the ability to obtain within 180 days from hire date • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record. • Possession of Work Zone Safety Certification including flagging within one year of hire. • Ability to lift and carry up to 35 pounds on a routine basis. Desired Qualifications Knowledge of common construction practices, concrete work, excavation and carpentry. Knowledge of native plants, natural communities, forest resources, and water resources. Ability to read written instructions and memos in English. Ability to add, subtracts, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common factors and decimals. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions. Ability to follow oral instructions. Ability to work as part of a team. Knowledge of procedures to handle hazardous materials, and work zones safety. Salary starting rate of pay is $14.61 per hour.
