The City Auditor's Office conducts independent assessments of the work of city government to provide elected officials, management, and the public with objective information and recommendations to improve city operations and strengthen city government's accountability to the public.  The city auditor is appointed by and reports to the Mayor and City Council and is independent of the city manager.

Kansas City has a council-manager form of government and has 19 departments that provide a wide range of municipal services. The fiscal year 2020 budget is about $1.7 billion.
