Lawrence, Kan. is a town founded on the principles of freedom and equality of all people.  In the 1800s, settlers known as "Free-Staters" moved to Lawrence from the Northeast to establish the new Kansas territory as a free state when it was introduced to the Union.  During the Civil War, the town was burned to the ground by pro-slavery forces.  Shortly after, Lawrence was rebuilt, rising from the ashes and developing into the vibrant, unmistakably unique town that it is today.
