Job Description

The Automotive Technician performs skilled repair, overhaul, service and maintenance on a wide variety of the City’s fleet vehicles; cars, light and medium duty trucks and light equipment.

Wage is $29.66, $31.14 or $32.70/hour, dependent on ASE Certifications.


  • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems in light/medium duty gas and diesel trucks
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical problems in automobiles and patrol cars
  • Inspect, diagnose and repair alternative fuel vehicles, including electric, hybrid, CNG and propane
  • Perform planned maintenance to vehicles and equipment,
  • Service vehicles and equipment in field when necessary,
  • Maintain records of daily work, time and materials,
  • Participate in training and remain current on latest automotive technology and repair procedures,
  • Perform welding and fabrication on body and frame parts as well as custom‑built accessories and equipment.




  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus additional technical training
  • Minimum of two ASE Certifications
  • Valid State of Illinois Class C Driver’s License



  • Associates degree in Applied Science, Automotive Service
  • ASE Diesel Certifications
  • ASE Master Automotive Technician and/or Master Medium Truck Technician Certifications
