Job Description

The Public Works Fleet and Facilities Division is seeking two Full-Time Lead Day Porters to join our team. We have two shifts available: Sunday through Thursday (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM) and Tuesday through Friday (11:00 AM – 7:30 PM) with Saturday (7:00 AM – 3:30 PM). As a Lead Day Porter, you will play a key role in leading the Day Porter team, ensuring high standards of cleanliness, and providing excellent customer service. You will work closely with contractors, manage supplies, and step in when needed to cover staff absences. We are proud of our tenured team and take great pride in the work we do.
 
Key Responsibilities
 

  • Lead and coordinate Day Porter staff to ensure timely and high-quality completion of work.
  • Assist in the coordination of janitorial contractors and oversee nighttime cleaning operations.
  • Perform daily cleaning tasks and operate cleaning equipment as needed.
  • Provide coverage for staff during vacations or sick leave.
  • Utilize janitorial preventative maintenance software.
  • Prepare buildings and spaces for janitorial care, including moving furniture and setting up for events.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, colleagues, and contractors, with bilingual skills (Spanish/English) preferred.
  • Respond to after-hours calls and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Perform basic cleaning services, including handling bloodborne pathogens and biohazards.
  • Manage inventory, maintain log sheets, and ensure accurate documentation of service activities.
  • Assist with setting up meeting rooms and ensuring cleanliness before and after events.

 
The Ideal Candidate
We are looking for candidates with a strong background in janitorial services for commercial buildings and a deep understanding of cleaning equipment and methods. Certifications such as Bloodborne Pathogens, ISSA, or CMI are helpful. Bilingual skills in Spanish and English are a plus. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, adaptable, and able to manage work across multiple locations. Strong people skills and a customer-focused approach are essential.

Acceptable Experience and Training

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Five years of experience in janitorial or day porter roles, with at least one year of supervisory experience.
  • Or, an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. 

Licensing and Certifications

  • Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.
  • Complete Bloodborne Pathogens training within 3 months of hire.

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions with or without reasonable accommodation.
 
Heavy Work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of forces constantly to move objects.
 
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, work space restrictions, intense noises, and travel.

Bilingual incentive pay available.
 
Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
