The Challenge
We are looking for an experienced Engineering Technician II to join our Highway Construction team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Serve as a project roadway/structure inspector supporting senior engineers in the administration of highway construction contracts.
    • Monitor contractor’s daily operations to ensure compliance with contracts, plans, and specifications.
    • Work with other technicians, including NCDOT staff and contract construction inspectors.
    • Resolve daily constructability issues and troubleshoot problems to mitigate delays to contractor progress.
    • Monitor utility relocation efforts by providing survey alignment/layout of proposed roadway/structure improvements, daily inspecting, and tracking relocation work.
    • Anticipate contract problems and advise supervisor of need for plan revisions, supplemental agreements, or other contract adjustments to improve safety, timely delivery, and/or quality of delivered product.
    • Monitor contractor operations to ensure compliance with specifications, plans, contractual provisions, subcontractor agreements, and contract Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) requirements.
    • Ensure compliance with NC Sedimentation and Pollution Control Act and that all work performed in permitted areas, is done in accordance with permits.
    • Effectively communicate and coordinate work with contractors, subcontractors, utility owners, and property owners to minimize delays and disturbances while maximizing project progress.
    • Serve as survey crew member.
    • Assist with project stakeouts.
 
What You Bring
    • Knowledge and understanding of NCDOT highway and bridge construction.
    • Ability to understand contracts, plans, standards, and specifications.
    • Experience maintaining neat and legible records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.
    • Computer skills in laptops, software, and math functions.
    • Knowledge and understanding of general concepts, practices, and theories used in construction inspection and surveying.
    • Ability to use a calculator to perform basic math calculations.
    • Ability to establish and maintain positive communication between technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public.
    • Solid communications skills to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner.
    • Ability to work safely in an outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction.
    • Fitness to perform moderate physical activity, including walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing.
    • Strength to lift 50 pounds.
    • Ability to work nights and weekends as required.

Education & Experience
    • Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a related field, and
    • 2+ years relevant technician-level experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of training and experience.
