The Challenge
We are hiring a transportation worker II to join our Pitt County Maintenance team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Perform maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State Maintained roads and roadside features.
    • Install traffic and erosion control devices.
    • Operate hand and power tools and heavy equipment.
    • Clear right of ways.
    • Perform preventive maintenance and repairs to pavements, shoulder maintenance, pipe installation or other drainage tasks.
    • Inventory and track materials used.
    • Perform manual labor tasks.
    • Act upon verbal and written communications to successfully complete assigned tasks.
  
What You Bring
    • Strength to repeatedly lift up to 80 pounds.
    • Agility to traverse steep and uneven terrain, walk and stand for long periods of time, shovel, rake, and sweep.
    • Ability to work effectively in extreme temperature conditions while performing manual labor road maintenance,
    • Ability to work in all types of weather.
    • A Commercial Driver's License with Tanker (N) endorsement. (Don’t have one?  STILL APPLY! You can get it through our on-the-job training within 360 days of hire.)
    • Safety toe shoes.
    • Working Knowledge of Standard Road Maintenance and Construction Procedures.
    • Experience in 1+ of the following:  shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching.
    • Experience with installation of erosion control devices.
    • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace safety policies.
    • Experience in the operation of 2+ pieces of the following equipment:  backhoes, tandem dump trucks, motor graders, front end loaders, forklifts, force feed loaders, asphalt distributors, asphalt patchers, crack sealing machines, track excavators, skid steers, or sweepers.
  
Notes
    • You will be exposed to all types of weather conditions including ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, and work in high volumes of traffic and around heavy construction equipment.
    • We will conduct a pre-employment drug test and a background check of your previous employers for the past 3 years for drug/alcohol abuse. We will also conduct a criminal background check.
    • This position is subject to emergency call back, scheduled night work, and out of town travel during adverse weather or other extreme circumstances.
 
Education & Experience
    • High school/GED diploma, and
    • 3+ years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
