The City of Lenexa Legal department is now accepting applications for an Assistant City Attorney to join our team. Position Summary

This is highly responsible legal work which may be of a generalized or specialized nature in the provision of legal services to City departments including, but not limited to: negotiation and preparation of contracts; providing legal advice to City departments, division heads and elected officials; conducting legal research; drafting City ordinances, resolutions, administrative policies, and other legal documents; monitoring, drafting, coordinating and providing legislative testimony on the City’s behalf, and for representing the City before courts, boards, commissions and similar bodies.  Work involves increasing responsibility, initiative, and participation in special assignments and projects of an administrative nature, or as assigned by the City Attorney or Deputy City Attorney.  Supervision may be exercised over other legal department attorneys and professional staff assisting in the preparation of cases and other legal assignments. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Performs legal research and prepares opinions on various complex legal problems for City departments, boards, commissions and agencies.
  • Reviews and drafts proposed contracts, bond and financing papers, insurance policies, administrative policies, legislation and ordinances affecting the City.
  • Prepares reports and recommendations, works with state and federal officials, and other legal professionals to coordinate and remain informed on current and pending legislation and to analyze legislation to determine impact on City, works with other City officials in improving and maintaining the delivery of legal services to other City departments.
  • Stays informed of new and pending legal issues; participates in legal seminars. Develops, administers and implements effective training seminars for other City departments and groups on legal issues including applicable state and federal laws. Represents the City and travels to municipal and state courts, before various boards and commissions, at administrative hearings, in lawsuits and as otherwise required.
  • Supervises, counsels, coaches and advises subordinate departmental attorneys and support staff, assisting in their professional development in municipal government law, completing performance evaluations and discipline as necessary.
  • Investigates claims and complaints by or against the City; recommends and takes action as appropriate.
  • Communicates effectively and fosters professional relationships with public officials, City staff and general public; maintains confidentiality as appropriate.

Qualifications

  • Minimum: Juris Doctorate degree from accredited law school, admission and membership in good standing to the Kansas State Bar, compliance with annual CLE requirements, four years’ experience in the practice of law, possession of a valid drivers’ license.
  • Desired: Three years’ experience in municipal (or other government) law, including trial experience and supervisory training or experience. 

Compensation and Benefits

Salary hiring range is $84,195 to $102,930 DOQ and directly related experience.
