Job Description

McCool Development Solutions (MDS) is a land use consulting firm located in Denver, Colorado, specializing in providing community planning and development solutions for our public and private sector clients throughout the West.  We have an immediate opening for a Senior Associate.  The ideal candidate to join our small, fun, and innovative firm must demonstrate a multifaceted approach to developing vibrant, livable, and economically successful communities.  Senior Associates must also have experience managing and juggling a variety of complex projects and interacting with public and private sector clients. Essential functions include:

  • Project management, including direct client contact and coordination of subconsultants, and other professionals as needed during all stages of project development.
  • Lead Planner/Urban Designer for development projects and management of the entitlement and permitting process for private sector clients.
  • Provide planning services to municipal clients, including development review and performing such duties as set forth in the City’s/Town’s long range planning documents, Zoning Ordinances, Subdivision Regulations, and other applicable City/Town policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate community meetings and present reports, information and recommendations to various jurisdictional Commissions and Boards regarding projects, plans, ordinances, and other planning related matters.
  • Lead Planner/Urban Designer in the preparation of comprehensive plans, downtown revitalization plans, land use code updates, design standards and guidelines, including concept diagrams, high-quality illustrative graphics, and testing of regulatory concepts.
  • Collection and analysis of data, and research and interpretation of detailed plans and regulatory documents.
  • Preparation of technical documents, presentations, and other related planning work products.
  • Ability to travel post COVID-19 restrictions.


Essential Skills/Attributes

  • Bachelor’s degree in planning, urban design, landscape architecture, or related field. Master’s Degree in planning or related field and ACIP certification is highly desirable.
  • 5-7 years of municipal planning experience.
  • Multi-tasking and ability to manage and prioritize various projects in multiple markets simultaneously while adhering to tight deadlines.  
  • Ability to work independently and manage own time with little supervision.  
  • High level of proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Creative Suites, or other graphic programs.
  • Exemplary writing and presentation skills with the ability to communicate technical information to non-technical people is a must.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of municipal planning, development review, and land development processes.
  • Ability to interpret construction documents and knowledge of building codes and planning processes.
