Pay for the Parks and Recreation Director position is dependent upon qualifications, but
starts at $90,691. The City provides a competitive benefit package.
The Parks and Recreation Director performs complex leadership, managerial and professional work in planning, organizing, directing, and overseeing the activities, projects and operations the department. This position will be responsible for managing the following programs: parks, open spaces and trails, youth and adult recreation, athletics, special events, and programming at the Fruita Community Center, which includes aquatics (the Community Center has an indoor and outdoor pool), youth activities, childcare, fitness programs, senior services, and building maintenance. The Fruita Community Center is a 55,000 square foot facility, and City owned park lands includes 265 acres of a variety of different parks and open space.
In 2020, the City adopted its updated comprehensive plan, Fruita in Motion, and recently adopted both the Parks, Health, Recreation, Open Space and Trails (PHROST) Master Plan and the North Fruita Desert Master Plan. The next Parks and Recreation Director will be tasked with implementing the goals of both of these plans, which include, but are not limited to, significant expansions at both Little Salt Wash Park and Reed Park, and creating 30+ miles of new trails at the North Fruita Desert. The next Parks and Recreation Director shall also have a strong commitment to excellent customer service and be a highly collaborative leader. Of all City departments, Parks and Recreation interacts directly with many residents on a regular basis. We want our residents to feel special as they participate in community events, programs, and attend our incredible Community Center. The City budget is $20 million, and the Parks and Recreation Director manages $1.35 million of the budget in the general fund, and a $2.7 million budget at the Fruita Community Center. The Parks and Recreation Department is made up of 15 FTE and over a 100 PTE.
