The Town of Sterling, Mass., (pop. 8,000; FY21 budget $24.4M) seeks a skilled and experienced public works professional with effective management, technical, and communication skills for the position of Superintendent of Public Works. The Superintendent is responsible for highways, engineering, cemeteries, parks and trees, athletic/recreation fields, the Public Works Department building and vehicle maintenance, solid waste collection and disposal, and water. Responsible for the preparation and management of the DPW divisions’ annual operating budgets as well as the direction, coordination, and administration of the various divisions. The FY22 budget for the DPW is nearly $1.77M and the Water Department budget is nearly $1.06M. The department includes 16 full-time employees, including a foreman for Highway/CPT/Maintenance and a foreman for Water. Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, management, or a related field. At least 7 years of progressively responsible experience in public works construction, maintenance, and engineering, with at least 3 years in a management position.
