Job Description

The City of Cape Girardeau, Missouri (40,559) located on the Mississippi River in the SE part of the state, is seeking qualified applicants for this Department Head position.  A Charter City operating under the Council/Manager Plan, the Parks & Recreation Director is appointed by and reports directly to the City Manager. 


This position requires Superior Leadership and Team Management qualities, progressive Management experience, and a thorough understanding of principles and objectives of parks & recreation programs. Additionally, this position requires knowledge of techniques, methodologies and procedures used in construction of recreation and athletic facilities, risk management and safety rules and regulations.   The Department has 50 full time, approximately 600 part time personnel (during peak season), a 6+ million operational budget, 25 parks totaling 662.5 acres, 3 community centers, 1 indoor/outdoor Olympic size pool, 1 family aquatics center, 2 sports complexes, 1 golf course, 3 cemeteries, 1 trail and an extensive recreation program. 


Minimum qualifications include Bachelors Degree with major course work in park and recreation management or related field demonstrated leadership/supervisory/management skills, proven administrative skills, five (5) years progressive responsible experience in park maintenance, recreation programs, concession operation, golf course and cemetery maintenance or equivalent public management filed. 


Starting salary $76,722 - $80,000, with an excellent benefit and retirement program.
