Job Description

The Position

**20 hours per week**

Are you passionate about connecting the Spanish or Arabic-speaking community to their local library? Are you a detail-oriented person who is energized by the idea of coordinating with community partners and senior living facilities? Are you enthusiastic about engaging and building relationships with adults and representing the library as a welcoming place for everyone?

If so, this might be the job for you! Beaverton City Library is seeking someone to join our team in a new Outreach Specialist position focused on adults. The outreach will mostly be off-site but will occasionally be virtual or hosting groups at the library. This is a new position at the library and will begin by focusing on building relationships with community partners that serve adults. Until those partnerships are established and outreach opportunities increase, the person in this position will assist with other community engagement tasks. The three populations this position will focus on are adults with low literacy levels; older adults at long term care facilities; and new immigrants and other new arrivals to the Beaverton area.

Our Outreach Specialists are a part of the library’s Community Engagement Team. Our team enthusiastically provides outreach in the Beaverton area, striving to be both welcoming and responsive to the dynamic needs in our community.

The work schedule for this position will vary and requires flexibility but is set two weeks in advance.

This is a non-exempt, SEIU-classified position. This position may require evening and weekend work. There is one vacancy.

**A cover letter is required with your job application submission.**Please note: Grammar and technical writing skills will be evaluated during the application review process. Only required or requested documents are guaranteed to be considered.

  • Knowledge of and experience working with the Latinx, Middle Eastern or African communities. This experience is demonstrated by knowledge of the traditions, values, and customs of the community being served as well as the ability to identify specific examples of experience working with and building trust directly with individuals and families who identify with this community. Requires speaking, writing and reading fluently in both English and either Spanish or Arabic.

  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet the city’s driving standards.
  • Ability to pass reference checks, a degree verification check and satisfy the requirements of a background check.

Beaverton is a diverse city, boasting a large population of qualified persons, including women, veterans, Black, Indigenous and people of color, persons with disabilities, generational groups, persons who speak many languages and are of diverse national origins.

It is widely stated—and supported by studies—that candidates, especially women, are less likely to apply for a job unless they believe they meet 100% of the hiring criteria. The city’s talent acquisition goals include hiring the candidate who is best able to meet the performance objectives of the role. We therefore encourage persons with non-traditional skill sets and experiences to apply, even if you believe you do not meet 100% of the qualifications and hiring criteria described.
