Kenly Town Manager

The Town of Kenly seeks a strong leader and experienced supervisor as its next Town Manager. The ideal candidate will be comfortable managing local government budgets, passionate about relationship building, and committed to the success of the community. As a small town with a strong local heritage, the Town Manager will have the opportunity to highlight Kenly’s unique character through the continued revitalization of downtown.

The Town

The Town of Kenly, population 1,400, offers a welcoming, affordable, and convenient place to live, work, and play in northern Johnston County, N.C. Widely known around the County as Friendly Kenly, visitors will find that community members are always ready to lend a hand or provide space to rest from a long drive at Kenly 95. Easily accessible from the I-95 corridor, the Town is only 45 minutes from Raleigh and 15 minutes from Wilson. For those interested in staying nearby, there’s lots to explore. Downtown Kenly is the place to be, especially during the Christmas season, with its highly anticipated Christmas on Main festival, a nighttime parade, and beautifully decorated storefronts. New businesses certainly agree – with several recently joining the downtown community.

The Position

The Kenly Town Manager is appointed by and works under the direction of a responsive Mayor and Town Council who are unified in their desire to find and support an outstanding candidate to guide Town goals. The position is responsible for overseeing a $4 million annual operating budget and 25 full and part-time personnel and ensuring continuity for the wide range of community services including police protection, water and stormwater management, wastewater collection and treatment, public works, planning and zoning, parks and recreation, and the library. The Manager will also work collaboratively with the Kenly Volunteer Fire Department to provide fire services.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Ability to manage, coordinate, and oversee all operations and activities of Town departments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and establish strong relationships with Town Council, department staff, and residents.
  • Ability to work holistically with Town management and departments to meet Town-wide goals and constraints.
  • Knowledge of local government budget development and management, and ability to work collaboratively with Town Council and staff through the annual budget process.
  • Knowledge of modern and effective management principles and practices including communication, leadership, and conflict resolution.
  • Knowledge of economic development best practices and tools related to downtown revitalization and small-town growth.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least two years of progressive experience in local government leadership.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in public administration or a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in public administration or related field.
  • Small town experience

Compensation and Benefits

  • Salary Range - $70,000-$80,000 with competitive benefits.
  • Town residency is not required but must be within 20 minutes of Town Hall to ensure effective connection with the Town.
