What's the role?

We’re looking for a collaborative and team-oriented professional to take on the role of DEPUTY BUILDING OFFICIAL. You will join a fast-paced, dynamic team environment, planning, directing, coordinating, and supervising the activities of the Building Division Permit Center and Inspection teams, serving as the Permit Navigator and customer service liaison, and developing and providing comprehensive training programs for divisional staff, within the Building Division of the Community Development Department. This position receives direction from the Chief Building Official, exercises direct supervision over technical and clerical staff, and is a talented problem-solver with a reputation for a customer-focused approach and working cooperatively and collaboratively with other departments. The Essentials

  • Five years of increasingly responsible experience in building inspection, plan review, design or construction, including one year of lead or supervisory experience, and one year of which shall be serving a municipal building department/division.
  • Education equivalent to an associate’s degree from an accredited college or university in architecture, business, public administration, construction, or related field.
  • Valid Class C California Driver License.
  • Possession of a Residential or Commercial Combination Inspector Certification or CALGreen Certification issued by the International Code Council (ICC).

Bonus Points

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, business, public administration, construction, or related field.
  • Possession of a Certified Building Official Certification issued by ICC.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the functions of the Permit Center and serve as the Permit Navigator and customer service liaison
  • Work with applicants, divisions and departments to improve and streamline building processes to ensure a customer-focused approach while meeting the City’s requirements.
  • Create a team-work oriented environment that emphasizes collaboration, accountability and responsiveness
  • Represent the Building Division in the Implementation of a state of the art online permitting and land management system
  • Help implement the City’s sustainability requirements as they apply to the Building Division activities
