Job Description

The Public Works Storm Team is excited to announce the opening of a Stormwater Operator position. The Storm crew is looking for a qualified person to join the team who is skilled in running heavy equipment, enjoys working on a team and understands the importance of keeping our waterways clean and safe. 

The primary objective of this position is to assist in the maintenance and inspection of the city's stormwater system. The person in this role will be expected to operate a variety of equipment and will frequently work with other staff in the division for routine and non-routine projects. This position is part of the Storm Maintenance division.

This is a non-exempt, DOT-covered and SEIU-classified position. Individuals in this position will be subject to random drug screens/breath alcohol tests in accordance with DOT guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Four years of experience in operations, installation, construction repair and maintenance of utility systems 
    • Experience to include: sanitary sewer/storm drainage systems, retrofitting of sections of pipe, and replacement or addition of manholes, pollution control devices or catch basin structures. 
  • One year of experience in operating heavy equipment 
    • Experience to include: small /midsized excavator, vactor and backhoe
  • Ability to pass reference checks, CDL history check, if applicable, physical and drug screen and satisfy the requirements of a background check. 

Licensing and Special Requirements:
License and certifications are required at time of hire unless otherwise noted

  • Valid driver's license and the ability to meet the city's driving standards
  • CDL A with air brake and tank endorsement within six months of hire. 
  • Department of Environmental Quality Class II Wastewater Collection Certificate within 12 months of hire. 
  • Flagger training required within 12 months of hire. 
  • CPR and First Aid certification within 12 months of hire. 

Preferred Qualifications:  

  • CDL A with air brake and tank endorsements at the time of application.
  • Department of Environmental Quality Class II Wastewater Collection Certificate at the time of application. 
  • Experience working with Cityworks software
  • Experience with driving combination truck, sweeper and flush trucks
  • Knowledge of NASSCO pipe inspection software and coding
