Job Description

The City of Florence’s Public Works Department is seeking a full-time (Monday-Friday; 8am-5pm) GIS Technician who will be an exceptional addition to our team. The GIS Technician is an intermediate contributor that performs all or most of the standard work within the function. This position performs the necessary functions to support the City’s Public Works and other departments using GIS products and information, as well as other aspects of geo-spatial technology related to GIS. 

This position is responsible for maintaining and building a GIS database of the City’s infrastructure, assets, and other information useful to the City’s operations. Additionally, this position acts as a point of contact for day-to-day operations of the GIS program and assists and educates others within the organization in the use and interpretation of the GIS products.

What you will do

  1. Maintain and update the City’s GIS data on infrastructure, streets, and utility systems.
  2. Update data based upon as-built drawings and working with field crews.
  3. Act as records custodian for as-built drawings, maps, and other related records.
  4. Produce, develop, and maintain a variety of reports, maps, and drawings.
  5. Act as point of contact for day-to-day operations of the GIS program with internal and external customers.
  6. Research and review land use transactions, work with legal descriptions, create maps, etc.
  7. Be accurate and able to take specific direction well
  8. Be knowledgeable and able to answer questions of both internal and external customers
  9. Provide excellent customer service at all times
  10. Adhere to the City’s Values, Mission Statement, and Core Competencies and represent the City to the community

What to bring with you

  1. Degree or certificate in geographic information systems or a closely related field
  2. 1+ year of experience and training in full range of GIS applications
  3. Professional experience (outside of academia) experience using ArcGIS software suite.
  4. Knowledge of cartography, use of GIS in a professional setting, and knowledge of GIS software
  5. Knowledge of customer service techniques
  6. Skills in communication, time management, and in using technology
  7. Ability to craft professional documents, perform detail-oriented assignments in a timely manner, build relationships and work well with others
