The City of Wentzville is seeking an energentic, motivated candidate to join its team as an Economic Development Coordinator. The successful candidate will demonstrate excellent customer-service skills, a high level of organization, proactive communication and detail-orientation.

The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced environment and will take initiative to proactively accomplish goals set by the City, including supporting business attraction/retention and implementing objectives as part of the Economic Development Strategic Plan.

This position is responsible for coordinating all economic development functions for the City of Wentzville. Reporting to the Assistant City Administrator, the primary emphasis of this position is to enhance the economic vitality of the City through the implementation and administration of programs, initiatives and economic incentives to attract new businesses and encourage expansion and retention of existing businesses. The position requires the exercise of independent professional judgment, analyzing problems, making decisions, recommending solutions and the initiative to do so within the framework of established regulations and policies.

  • Gather and evaluate resources and data including industry, social, economic, demographic, and other data to construct and maintain an Economic Development database.
  • Research, prepare, implement, maintain, and administer an Economic Development Strategic Plan to grow the City's economic base.
  • Advise Administration and elected officials on economic development issues.
  • Provide customer-driven, problem-solving, and professional economic development advice and serve as an advocate for economic development in line with the City's Comprehensive Plan, City Ordinances, and goals.
  • Research, prepare, implement, and administer economic development assistance programs.
  • Monitor and evaluate current projects for compliance with regulations, policies, and timetables.
  • Interact and provide assistance to developers for the growth of the community and maintain working knowledge of the development and redevelopment process.
  • Develop and implement marketing strategies to promote Wentzville to include updating the City's demographics and the Economic Development webpage, preparing marketing materials, etc.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of and advise the City Administrator and elected officials on special financing districts used as development incentives (i.e. TDD, CID, TIF, etc.).
  • Respond to inquiries from prospective and existing businesses, brokers and property owners
  • Monitor and report on legislation and regulations related to economic development to the appropriate impacted parties.
  • Coordinate with financial consultants and attorneys in the review of financial proformas and the preparation of development or incentive agreements.
  • Maintain strong working relationships and interact with all city departments, the general public, area businesses, special constituency groups (Downtown Business Association, Historical Society, Economic Development Roundtable, and Chamber of Commerce), the media, and others to grow the City and maintain existing clientele.
  • Coordinate and attend Downtown Committee meetings and activities or other meetings as assigned.
  • Create a balance between new growth and expansion of existing businesses.
  • Attend local business and community events and trade shows as directed and coordinate grant-writing efforts.

Ancillary Job Duties

  • Assist with negotiations and management of professional services contracts, property sales, or acquisitions.
  • Assist in preparing and monitoring department budget while seeking continuous improvement and maintaining fiscal responsibility.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications & Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Job Qualifications – Education, experience, and training that are required or desirable in order to effectively perform the job at the time of hire.  An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience will be considered.  Additional requirements and/or substitutions may be requested and require the approval of HR.

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Economic Development, Business Administration, Public Administration, Finance, Economics, Urban Planning, or a closely related field is required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Minimum three years of relevant economic development experience, preferably at a municipality or similar organization.
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Certification with the International Economic Development Council (CECD) or American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) is desired.
  • Experience with ESRI GIS software is desired.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities – May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with this position.

  • Proficiency in the use of basic business software (word processing, spreadsheets, email, presentations) and basic office equipment.
  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of Economic Development.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing including giving presentations.
  • Ability to effectively organize and prioritize work as well as manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent customer service and relationship building skills.
  • Regular attendance is a necessary and essential job duty.
