Job Description

General Definition and Conditions of Work

The Carrboro Recreation, Parks, & Cultural Resources Department is seeking qualified individuals for the Recreation Supervisor position.  The Recreation Supervisor works as part of a team of Program Division staff in planning, coordinating, implementing, and supervising a wide variety of recreation and leisure programs and services.  Assigned direct-programming areas include a combination of community events and festivals, general recreation classes and programs, and special events.

The Recreation Supervisor also performs a variety of professional and administrative tasks related to maintaining a comprehensive recreation program including, marketing, budgeting, purchasing, and program evaluation.  This position works closely with other full-time staff, part-time staff, volunteers, contractual instructors, performers, vendors, community-based planning committees, and neighboring municipal and county departments.

Essential Functions

Plans, coordinates, implements and supervises a variety of recreation and leisure programs for youths and adults.

Develops, coordinates, executes and evaluates marketing techniques to promote and disseminate information about programs, services and facilities.

Recruits, selects, trains and evaluates volunteer, paid staff and contract service providers.

Develops and issues program schedules, manuals, rules and other information pertaining to programs and activities.

Assesses needs for policies, procedures, rules and regulations.

Researches, assesses and identifies program and operation needs; helps prepare annual budget.

Identifies program and operation needs; recommends and initiates purchases of supplies; recommends short and long range goals for recreation plan.

Receives and investigates citizen/participant concerns and recommends corrective action.

Works with local school system, agencies and groups pertaining to programs and activities.

Monitors and updates recreation software.

Recommends program and activities staffing needs.

Liaises with a variety of community groups and committees.

Observes programs and staff; discusses programs with participants; conducts studies and surveys.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

The ideal candidate will have experience directly administering a variety of recreation programs and special events of varying size in a municipal or county setting as well as having broad experience working closely with citizens, volunteers, contractual employees, sponsors, vendors, and other stakeholders.

Physical Requirements

This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 25 pounds of force and occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force; work regularly requires speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires walking and sitting and occasionally requires standing, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work occasionally requires exposure to outdoor weather conditions, exposure to the risk of electrical shock and exposure to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).

 Additional Requirements

Valid driver’s license in the State of North Carolina is required.

Education and Experience

The position requires a college degree with major coursework in Recreation Management, Recreation Administration or a related field or an equivalent combination of education and work experience in a municipal or county recreation setting.  Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs is necessary.  Experience with recreation management software is desired.
