Purpose of Job
The purpose of this job is to facilitate and supervise the foster program within the Animal Services Department. Duties include, but are not limited to: Assessing foster program needs; training, supervising, supporting, and scheduling both new and existing fosters; and coordinating events and medical care for the animals in the program. This role is also responsible for handling foster animals and coordinating events along with the Volunteer Coordinator, as well as performing additional duties as necessary.
Job Related Requirements
WORK SCHEDULE: Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. plus some weekends and off-site events.
May be required to work on religious holidays.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
Must work cooperatively with others.
When requirements include vehicle operation, responsible for the safety, readiness and operation of the vehicle and must abide by our driving policy.
Minimum Training & Experience Required
High school diploma or equivalent and one year of customer service, coordinating (events and/or people), volunteer support or management, animal handling or animal welfare (volunteer coordinator, veterinary medicine, or animal behavior) or related experience required.
Valid driver's license is required.
Criminal background must indicate eligibility for the supervision of inmates.
Must obtain security training for the supervision of inmate workers as set forth by the Georgia Department of Corrections Standard Procedures within six months of date of hire or first available opportunity.
Supervisory, marketing, and training experience are preferred.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this job. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be assigned.
Provides proper onboarding and training for all adoption center fosters to include reviewing and demonstrating safe animal handling techniques, and reviewing safety rules, as well as also developing and maintaining foster literature, and advertising materials.
Provides leadership, direction and guidance in conducting day-to-day functions of programs and services as it relates to all animal foster programs.
Supervises fosters while at the adoption center to maintain safety and compliance with the foster/volunteer guidelines, and ensures that activities do not interfere with, and are tailored to support, normal operations.
Identifies and coordinates foster needs for all programs, and provides operational support in conjunction with other staff and assists with special events, such as on- and off-site outreach and adoption events, by recruiting, training and supervising fosters.
Attends appropriate foster recruitment events.
Responsible for accurately entering and maintaining foster information and relevant medical information.
Communicates with fosters in a timely and professional manner (this may include time outside of normal business hours). Communicates clear directions about after hours vet care as needed and coordinate with the Shelter supervisor about these issues.
Ensures that all foster animals receive age-specific care such as scheduled vaccines, medical care/treatment, food, and supplies.
Works with appropriate staff to ensure space in the adoption center is available for scheduled foster returns.
Maintains accurate, up-to-date information in PetPoint and any existing foster management database as it relates to community programs participants.
Interfaces with the community to engage, recruit, assist, and onboard residents as potential fosters.
Manages the Jail Dog and Wait Until 8® programs.
Works with the staff at corrections for the Jail Dog Program.
Works alongside leadership team, volunteer coordinator and staff to develop and implement new, sustainable programs that align with the Animal Services strategic plan.
Responds to inquiries and messages about all foster programs and works with the public, staff, and fosters to address any complaints or issues.
Supervises inmate labor, as well as supervises and assigns work to Community Service Workers.
Maintains departmental reports, spreadsheets, and other data as required.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of the policies, procedures, and activities of the Animal Services Department as they relate to the position of a foster’s ability to apply proper animal handling skills, basic medical knowledge and knowledge of individual animal temperament.
Ability to work independently, balance multiple projects, and meet deadlines.
Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and communication skills to be used with people across a variety of skill levels, back perspectives.
Ability to work with volunteers and co-workers in a professional manner.
Ability to speak and present information publicly and transparently on behalf of the Department and the Department’s mission.
Knowledge of the terminology used within the department.
