Job Description

The City of Spartanburg, South Carolina (pop. 38,401) is seeking an Assistant City Manager. Located along the rapidly growing I-85 corridor, Spartanburg has seen a sustained resurgence in economic investment and energy in recent years and is well positioned for continued growth.

The Assistant City Manager (ACM) supports the City Manager by assuming leadership and management responsibilities for assigned functions and services and directs the activities and operations of assigned departments. The ACM collaborates with departments to prepare and present the city’s annual budget, leads conversations with department heads to clarify City objectives and develop departmental goals, and reviews and recommends policies for the City Manager and City Council's approval.

The City of Spartanburg offers a comprehensive, market competitive salary and benefits package that includes a base salary between $130,000 and $140,000; an excellent benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance through the South Carolina Public Employee Benefit Authority (PEBA), the SC State Health Plan.  Additional benefits include access to free onsite health clinic, 11 Paid Holidays; Paid Time Off (3 ½ weeks per year) and Longevity Leave based on years of service. Relocation assistance may be available.

A Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Public Administration, Business Administration, Finance, or a closely related field, and a minimum of ten years professional experience in a municipal government organization of similar to size and service delivery comparable to the City of Spartanburg, with a minimum of five years of professional experience in an administrative or supervisory capacity (department director, assistant director, assistant city manager, city manager) required.  A Master’s degree, and ICMA certification preferred.  EOE.
