The next City of Cottonwood Fire Chief has a strong background in municipal Fire Department practices, is skilled in developing and maintaining effective resources and relationships throughout the community, and has experience managing services involving fire protection, fire prevention, emergency medical services, rescue, hazardous materials, and disaster management. He or she must have working knowledge of water flows, water pressure, new developments, and construction, and must also be able to work through complex, City-wide issues affecting fire protection and prevention operations.
The new Chief is approachable, able to act as a successful change agent, and able to find flexible solutions that meet the needs of businesses, the City, and the community. He or she focuses on creating a successful department through solid interdepartmental and community relationships.
As a top leader within the organization, the new Chief will have extensive experience directing large teams and engaging in interactive, inter-departmental discussions that influence organizational decisions, change, and plans. He or she will also have proven experience working across organizations to maintain successful, community-wide, intergovernmental working relationships on behalf of the City.
Experience and Education:
The equivalent of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a major in fire science or a related field and ten (10) years of progressively increasing responsibility in the fire service, five (5) of which were in a lead or supervisory capacity, or any combination of education and experience which demonstrates the ability to successfully meet the needs of the position. Must possess or be able to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the employment date.
The equivalent of a master’s degree from an accredited college or university in fire service administration, public administration, or related field, Chief Fire Officer credentials, completion of the National Fire Academy Executive Officer program, and bilingual English/Spanish skills are highly desirable.
The Fire Department consists of 27 certified staff members, one civilian staff member, and a small volunteer program. The Fire Chief reports directly to the City Manager, and has five direct reports: three Battalion Chiefs, one Fire Marshall, and one Administrative Assistant. The daily operations include two engines, each with its own four-person crew, operating out of one centralized station. The department operates on a 48–96 schedule (administrative and prevention staff excepted), and takes an active role in the community. The staff has certified car seat technicians available to the public; actively provides education and training opportunities such as CCC, Safe Sitter, and Fire School; and has an extremely active prevention division focused on educating youth in the community on fire safety. The department has a budget of approximately $3.5 million annually.

The City of Cottonwood operates under the Manager–Council form of government with an elected Mayor and six elected council members. The City Manager, who reports directly to the Council, is responsible for overseeing the administration of the City and its approximate 200 full-time and 100 part-time staff. The City of Cottonwood consists of the following major departments: Administration, Tourism and Economic Development, Legal, Municipal Court, Finance, Human Resources, Information Technology, Transit, Library, Parks and Recreation, Police, Communications, Fire & Medical, Community Development, Public Works, Engineering, Water, and Wastewater. The City of Cottonwood is also responsible for multiple Boards and Commissions.
About the Area:
Cottonwood, the Heart of Arizona Wine Country, is located in the Verde Valley. It is home to approximately 12,000 residents and services the greater Verde Valley population of about 40,000. With an elevation of 3,300 ft., a mild climate, and outdoor recreational amenities like the Verde River, Cottonwood is an ideal place to live, play, and work.
Compensation and Benefits:
The full salary range for the Fire Chief position is $93,735–$138,130. The hiring range for this position is $93,735–$108,532. Salary for the chosen candidate will depend on experience and education. This position is exempt, benefit-eligible, and serves at the will of the City Manager. The City of Cottonwood offers an extensive benefit package that includes:
· Enrollment in the Public Safety Personnel Retirement System
· Medical and dental coverage at 100% for the employee and a partial percentage for dependent coverage
· Vision coverage (optional at your expense)
· Optional health savings account (HSA) with employer contributions
· Group term life insurance amounting to the annual salary plus $50,000.
