The City of Greenbelt, Maryland (pop. 24,555), an easily accessible suburb of Washington D.C. located in Prince George’s County, was created in 1937 as the first “greenbelt” town or garden city created inside a ring of woodlands. The homes in Greenbelt were grouped in "superblocks," with a system of interior walkways permitting residents to travel from their homes to the town center without crossing a major street. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic were separated, and two curving major streets were laid out upon and below a crescent-shaped natural ridge, with shops, school, ball fields, community buildings and the like grouped in the center.
A diverse community, Greenbelt has expanded to include new housing and commercial areas just outside of the historic core. The City still maintains its small-town atmosphere, parks, playgrounds, cooperative spirit, and some of the most distinctive and affordable housing in the Washington area. Greenbelt is committed to promoting and participating in environmentally friendly causes to help make the City better for the future.
