Annual Pay Range: $51,878.01 - $66,336.59

Hourly Pay Range: $24.941353 - $31.892593


Annual Pay Range: $60,079.10 - $76,784.14

Hourly Pay Range: $28.884182 - $36.915454

Salary offers will be made within the posted pay range and will be based on a candidate's experience (paid or unpaid) that is directly relevant to the position.

Clackamas Water Environment Services (WES) is searching for motivated individuals to join our dedicated team as a Wastewater Plant Operator 1 or Wastewater Plant Operator 2. Ideal candidates will possess strong communication and interpersonal skills, as well as a team-oriented approach to work. If selected for this position, you will assist in the inspection, maintenance, monitoring, operation, and process control of a wastewater treatment plant. Key components of this position include operating wastewater treatment plant equipment, performing routine maintenance and cleaning, planning, monitoring, evaluating and adjusting the treatment process, and participating as an important member of the team coordinating/overseeing plant operations and maintenance.

This is a unique opportunity as we are planning to fill multiple vacant positions as a result of this recruitment process and are willing to consider applicants at either the Operator 1 or 2 level.

Incumbents in the Wastewater Plan Operator 1 classification will be promoted to the Wastewater Plant Operator 2 classification upon satisfactory completion of an approved training and development plan. Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*

• A High School Diploma or GED

• Knowledge of biological and chemical processes as well as environmental compliance in wastewater treatment

• Knowledge of Federal and state laws, regulations and permit requirements regarding wastewater treatment

• Experience providing excellent customer service and answering customer questions and/or complaints

• Experience operating hand tools and power tools necessary to maintain and operate equipment

• Experience applying safety precautions and performing all tasks within the established safety protocols

• Must be able to respond to after-hours emergencies on a call-out basis

• Must pass a post-offer physical assessment; accommodation requests will be reviewed on an individual basis in compliance with State and Federal legislation

• Driving is required for County business on a regular basis or to accomplish work. Preferred Special Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*

• Experience and/or education in wastewater treatment or related utility operations

• Associate's Degree in Wastewater Technology, Chemistry, Microbiology or a related field

• Experience with Rotating Biological Contractor treatment processes

• Experience with Lagoon and sand filter treatment processes

• Experience monitoring, troubleshooting, and diagnosing equipment malfunctions and taking or recommending appropriate corrective action

• Confined Space Entry certification

• CPR/First Aid certification

• Certification by the State of Oregon as Wastewater Treatment Provisional Grade 1 Operator

• Certification by the State of Oregon as Wastewater Treatment Grade 1 Operator

Other requirement that must be fulfilled WITHIN THREE (3) MONTHS AFTER HIRE:

• Certification by the State of Oregon as Wastewater Treatment Provisional Grade 1 Operator

Requirements include: Incumbent must have a high school diploma or GED; be engaged in a DEQ-approved operator training program; and be supervised by a certified operator while on the job. (http://www.oregon.gov/deq/FilterDocs/FS-OperCert-EntryLevel.pdf )

Other requirement that must be fulfilled WITHIN TWELVE (12) MONTHS AFTER HIRE:

• Certification by the State of Oregon as Wastewater Treatment Grade 1 Operator

(Requirements include: One year of part time or full time experience in routine performance of operator duties, tasks and responsibilities at a domestic wastewater collection or treatment system (includes operator intern or trainee) and an Associate of Applied Science degree in water quality technology or equivalent may substitute for 6 months experience. Part time experience is acceptable for operators working less than 40 hours a week as long as it is part of the operators' regular duty.)


Required Minimum Qualifications/ Transferrable Skills:*

• Same as for the Wastewater Plant Operator 1 (listed above) AND State of Oregon Wastewater Treatment Grade 3 Operator Certification at the time of hire

• Oregon Wastewater Treatment Grade 3 Operator Certification including at least three (3) years of experience in the routine performance of operator duties, tasks, and responsibilities at a domestic wastewater treatment system

• Duties require physical labor, including walking, reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending, balancing, climbing, shoveling, fine motor control, and ability to lift up to 50 pounds, carry, and push/pull up to 70 pounds.

• Duties also involve exposure to bacteria, viruses and toxins in wastewater, chemicals, exhaust fumes and dust, loud noises, and vibration.

• Some duties involve exposure to adverse weather conditions and hazardous locations, such as streets, live sewers, confined underground areas and on elevated platforms.

• Incumbents may perform after-hours emergency response on a callout basis.


This position works 40 hours during a standard workweek, including at least one weekend day (Saturday or Sunday):

• Specific hours of work and work locations will be discussed with the candidate selected for this position at the time an offer of employment is extended.

• Potential work locations include Tri-City Water Resource Recovery Facility (15941 S Agnes Ave, Oregon City, OR 97045) and Kellogg Creek Water Resource Recovery Facility (11525 SE McLoughlin Blvd, Milwaukie, OR).

• Potential work schedules of either five, 8-hour workdays, or four, 10-hour workdays, depending on work location.

• This position is designated as on-site/in-person. It is expected that the selected candidate will perform duties at the specified on-site work location.
