Under overall direction from the City Manager, this internship prepares a master's degree student to gain perspective on the complex and multiple challenges local governments face. This internship is a temporary assignment. Works closely with the City Manager, Assistant City Managers, and Department Heads to perform rotational assignments in the City Manager's Office, Public Works, Administration, and Development Services, gaining exposure to the complex and multiple challenges local governments face, considering new and innovative methods to deal with these challenges; performs a variety of analytical and administrative work in support of local government.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Relate and apply knowledge being acquired in the academic setting to municipal government setting.
- Perform research on a wide variety of issues of concern to the City Manager's Office affecting both municipal operations and the public.
- Provides management staff support for the City Manager's Office and management staff as requested, including research, official reports, preparing written graphs, computer supported presentations, oral reports, and other related documents.
- Performs special projects for the City Manager's Office as requested.
- Answer questions and provide information to the public in person, over the phone, and through written correspondence; investigate concerns and recommend action as necessary to resolve complaints.
- Other related duties as assigned by the City Manager, Asst City Manager, or Dept Head.
- Knowledge of current principles and practices of public administration.
- Knowledge of current trends and innovations in the field of city management and administration.
- Excellent leadership and management capabilities.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written), analytical, conflict resolution, and conceptual skills.
- Proficiency with personal computer and applicable software applications.
- Ability to make sound decisions.
- Student must be enrolled in good standing at an accredited college or university in a master's degree program that emphasizes public administration (preferred) or business administration.
- One to two years' work experience in the administration of municipal government or a demonstrated career path that shows the student's interest in local government as a career.
- Student membership in Texas City Management Association is required for the duration of the internship.
- Valid Class C Texas driver's license.
