Building Engineering Technician (Engineering & Public Works)

SALARY: $34.42 per hour or dependent on contract language based on a 40-hour workweek. This position is represented by a union; you may refer to the EPW Local 150 collective bargaining agreement available on our website.

JOB SUMMARY:
This position operates, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs major HVAC mechanical systems for public buildings. Additionally, this position also performs technical and complex building maintenance repairs, troubleshooting, and alterations involving electrical systems, plumbing systems, and miscellaneous mechanical systems; light carpentry; furniture repair & assembly; door & lock repair; appliance repair, and other duties as assigned. Work requires exercise of considerable technical judgment and initiative within the framework of established regulations and policies.

JOB DUTIES:
1. All those listed in Maintenance Worker 2 position.
2. Inspects, troubleshoots, and repairs all types of malfunctions associated with the Village’s mechanical systems.
3. Performs skilled journeyman level installation, alteration, preventive maintenance, and repair work on mechanical systems including but not limited to air handling units, chillers, boilers, VFD’s, pumps, compressors, and building automation systems.
4. May oversee outside contractor service and repair work for mechanical or other equipment or systems.
5. May be required to be on standby or on-call after hours and carry laptop or tablet to access, adjust or respond to equipment and/or building alarms.
6. Reads and understands blueprints, plans, and schematic diagrams.
7. Provide plan review and consultation on mechanical system improvements.
8. Performs other duties as assigned.
May act as Foreman in Foreman’s absence.
QUALFICATIONS:
1. Education equivalent to a high school diploma.
2. A minimum of five years of demonstrated direct experience with mechanical maintenance, preferably with multiple buildings or a campus.
3. Possession of a Stationary Engineer license from either Elgin or Chicago or equivalent.
4. Possession of a valid Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within six months from date of hire.
5. Proficiency with current computer technology, job specific software, and customer service systems.
