County Administrator

Clallam County lies across the northern portion of Washington’s Olympic Peninsula, the northwest corner of the state of Washington. Its western and northern boundaries are the Pacific Ocean and Strait of Juan de Fuca shorelines. The southern boundary cuts through Olympic National Park, the nearly million-acre wilderness interior of the Peninsula. The high mountains, rugged coastlines, deep forest, miles of unspoiled rivers, clean air and water, and mild marine climate offer a most unusual combination of environmental amenities. The County’s cultural, educational, and social amenities, along with the wide range of living styles from small town to rural to backwoods, make Clallam County a uniquely desirable place to live and work.

Many popular annual events are hosted in the area, including Concerts on the Pier, Clallam County Fair, Dungeness Crab & Seafood Festival, Sequim Lavender Festival, Sequim Irrigation Festival, and Juan de Fuca Festival of the Arts. Clallam County manages parks in various parts of the County, primarily oriented around water. Camping, fishing, boating, hiking, horse riding, picnicking, scuba diving, beachcombing, and fairgrounds activities are some of the recreation opportunities available to visitors.

Clallam is a charter county. The County Commission consists of three County Commissioners who are elected from single-member districts and serve staggered four-year terms.

The new County Administrator will find Clallam County an economically diverse area with great growth potential and the usual challenges facing similarly sized communities. While the county has a Finance Team made up of a CFO and Deputy CFO, the new County Administrator will need to have demonstrated knowledge of finance and budgetary best practices and planning principles, as well as the ability to identify new revenue streams to help the County develop sound strategies for long-term financial stability.

The next County Administrator will serve as a valuable asset and resource for the Board of County Commissioners, working closely with the elected members to provide leadership, guidance, and support for county operations. As a key member of the County’s leadership team the Administrator will be responsible for overseeing and managing county departments, ensuring that they are operating effectively to meet the needs of the community. In addition to supporting the Board of Commissioners the Administrator will also serve in a support capacity for the broader elected membership. The Administrator must maintain a strong relationship with all elected officials, fostering a culture of collaboration, communication, and transparency to promote effective decision making and problem-solving.

The selected candidate must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in public business administration, public administration, or a related field; a master’s degree in business or public administration or a closely related field is preferred. Candidates must have at least 10 years of experience in managerial, financial, and executive level decision making in local government and success working with an elected governing body or board. Candidates should have a demonstrated record of effective staff management, and exceptional community relationships. Experience working with unions is desired.
