Job Description

Waco, known as “The Heart of Texas” for its upbeat and friendly hospitality, is situated on the celebrated Brazos River, and midway between Dallas and Austin on Interstate 35. With a population of 142,241, it is the largest city in Central Texas and the 24th largest city in the state. The Waco Metropolitan Statistical Area, consisting of McLennan and Falls Counties, has an estimated population of 280,428.

The Waco Metropolitan Area Regional Sewerage System (WMARSS) is a wastewater treatment effort owned and operated by the City of Waco, serving the cities of Bellmead, Hewitt, Lacy Lakeview, Lorena, Robinson, Waco, and Woodway. Through the use of centralized regional service facilities, WMARSS has helped to reduce the environmental impact of multiple wastewater treatment facilities and protect and preserve our natural resources. Reporting to the Utilities Plant Operations Manager, the incoming Wastewater Treatment Plant Superintendent will be responsible for planning and managing the operations, maintenance, and repair of the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) for the Waco Water Utility Services Department (WUSD) which consists of over 200 employees. 

The incoming WWTP Superintendent is an essential position that plays a key role in coordination of ongoing efforts of the City of Waco’s Utility Department which, being in growth mode, brings both challenges and unique opportunities to the role. The incoming individual will be responsible for management of multiple facilities with the potential of managing up to two new sites in the near future. This position requires an individual with the ability to work in emergency situations, as required, and who is adept at working in a public-facing role. 

An Associate’s Degree in Environmental Science, Engineering, Business or Public Administration, or a related field is required, along with eight (8) years of water/wastewater experience, including four (4) years of supervisory experience; OR an equivalent combination of education and experience. A Bachelor’s degree is preferred. A minimum Class B Wastewater license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is required. A Class A Wastewater license from Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) is required within one year of employment. According to the needs of the City, additional training and certifications may be required. A valid Texas Driver’s license is required.

The salary range for this position is $100,000 - $119,000, with other considerations pending qualifications.
