Job Description

Progressive mayor, in year 1 of a second 4-year term, seeks an innovative and
experienced City Engineer to lead the Engineering Department, which includes a staff
of 10. (Transportation and traffic engineering operations will become a stand alone
department in 2021, pending City Council approval.) The individual ensures that
transportation projects adhere to best practices and adopted standards and supports
the City’s vision of a sustainable transportation network. He or she manages the
transportation capital improvement program budget; oversees all excavation work and
that work within the public right of way; coordinates with the Department of Public
Works regarding system improvements such as paving, striping, regulatory signage,
and signal operations; and provides engineering input for the City’s Comprehensive
Plan and Transportation Plan, along with other plans. The City Engineer coordinates
with other City departments and agencies including the Metropolitan Planning
Organization, Indiana Department of Transportation, Monroe County, Indiana
University, and City Boards and Commissions. Creative approaches to grow community
quality of life, sustainability, and equity are desired. Minimum knowledge equivalent to a
master’s degree in civil engineering or related field. Four years practicing as a licensed
professional engineer and must be currently licensed. Supervisory experience is
