Job Description

The Village of Buffalo Grove is seeking an innovative Fleet Manager within the Department of Public Works (BGPW).  BGPW serves as the long term stewards of village assets, and this stewardship extends to a diverse fleet of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment and vehicles. The Department is an APWA Accredited Agency and recent recipient of the Flag Forward award for innovation and excellence in asset management. 

The Fleet Manager is directly responsible for managing the operations and maintenance of 250 pieces of equipment including Police, Fire, and PW fleets.  The role must balance the in house work of four mechanics with the contractual work of private sector service providers in order to maximize efficiency, cost, and safety.  The role is less about turning wrenches and more about finding innovative solutions to fleet maintenance, with the latitude to experiment and help build a new, sustainable service model for the long term.  The role must also have great inventory and financial control skills, being responsible for requisition of vehicles, equipment, parts, fuels and other inventory items.  

The Fleet Manager also serves as a leader within BGPW, working cross functionally to establish policies and procedures within public works and with other Village departments.  Customer service is a key component, as the Fleet Section serves as an internal service fund to all Village departments.  

Duties of the Fleet Manager includes, but is not limited to: 

  • Managing fleet financial reporting, evaluates fleet condition, improves metrics for measuring performance.
  • Identifying operational risks, concerns, and opportunities and recommends corrective actions.
  • Utilizing the Cartegraph Operations Management Software to track and analyze data.
  • Maintaining awareness, and abides by, local, state, and federal fleet requirements. 
  • Managing the Village's fueling operations and coordinates regulatory compliance and reporting 
  • Setting performance expectations, and evaluates performance, of Fleet Section staff.
  • Working as part of the larger BGPW management team. 
  • Participating in the Snow and Ice Control Plan. 

Qualified candidates must have a Bachelors Degree and relevant work experience, a Masters Degree in Public Administration is a plus; considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of automotive shop management. APWA Public Fleet Management Certificate, Certified Fleet Professional (CPFP) or NAFA Certified Fleet Manager designation a plus. Additionally, candidates should be self-directed and driven to establish beneficial new ways to operate a maintenance section of public works and have superior written and verbal communication skills with the ability to translate findings into action items. 

Salary $110,000 +/- DOQ
