About the Finance Department: 

The City of Aspen Finance Department is responsible for administering all financial record keeping and reporting functions for the City of Aspen. Several of the functions handled by Finance include:

  • Compiling and producing the fiscal budget and financial statements for the City.
  • Maintaining debt and treasury management, internal audits, budget control, purchasing, accounting activities, and general administrative functions.
  • Providing support and advice to other City departments, the City Manager, and City Council in matters related to financial issues, policy, and strategic planning.
  • Overseeing the financial activities of the Aspen/Pitkin County Housing Authority.

The Job:

The Deputy Finance Director is responsible for the establishment, maintenance, and internal control of all accounting policies and procedures, internal and external financial reporting, annual financial audit and accounting software administration and training, general cashiering functions and treasury operations, in part and by extension of assigned staff and consistent with the organization’s values and mission statement. Additional responsibilities include complimentary oversight around debt service, investments, procurement, and team leadership.

Innovative, communicative, problem solvers that exhibit a combination of highly developed technical and analytical abilities are encouraged to apply. Minimum Requirements:

Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.  

Experience: Five years of progressively responsible experience in professional financial management and analysis, municipal finance, and governmental accounting; must have a minimum of five years of supervisory experience.

Technical Knowledge: Must be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Must have experience with modern sophisticated integrated accounting software systems.

Licenses & Certifications: Certification in Public Accounting (CPA) required. Must possess a valid Colorado Driver’s License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of start date. Must complete Incident Command System (ICS) training levels 100 and 200 within the first six months of start date.

Preferred Candidate: Master’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or Public Administration preferred.

NOTE: This position requires a Criminal Background Check upon hire. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a Criminal Background Check.

NOTE: Any combination of experience and education that would likely provide the required abilities, knowledge and skills as determined by the City of Aspen may be substituted for the requirements above.
