Job Description

Located in Jackson County, Oregon, Medford has a population of 90,887 and serves as the County seat. Medford is the demographic and economic hub of the southern Oregon region. With the continued growth in healthcare, retail, and manufacturing along with retirees discovering this great region, the City anticipates a continued growth rate of 1.8% per year.

The Rogue Valley offers endless outdoor recreation opportunities including beautiful city, state and county parks, championship golf courses, hiking, cycling, fishing, birdwatching, skiing, and whitewater rafting and a variety of other activities on the world-famous Rogue River only minutes away. Crater Lake, known as the deepest lake in North America, is just an hour and a half drive from Medford, and Oregon’s only national park. Medford is also conveniently located just two hours from the Oregon Coast, and 30 minutes from the Mt. Ashland ski area.

The City of Medford utilizes the Council-Manager form of government. The city is divided into four wards, with two Councilors per ward while the Mayor is elected at large. The City has 490 full-time employees, 185 part-time/temporary employees and a biennial budget of $480,338,500. Current City Manager Brian Sjothun announced his retirement following 20 years of service to the City of Medford. Brian served as the City’s Parks and Recreation Director for 12 years before being promoted to City Manager in 2016.

The salary range for this position is $176,293 to $225,000 with starting salary dependent upon experience and qualifications. Comprehensive benefit package includes Oregon PERS, employer contribution to deferred compensation account, generous paid leave, and medical/dental/vision coverage for employee and family paid at 100% by the City with the opportunity to buy-up to a lower deductible plan.

This position requires graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in public administration, business administration or a related field and seven (7) years of progressively responsible management experience including at least five (5) in a government setting. Senior level local government leadership experience is highly desirable. Per City Charter, the City Manager is required to establish City residency within one year of appointment and shall maintain residency throughout his or her tenure of employment.
